  5. Root canal - After a root canal, teeth tend to become brittle and are more apt to fracture. These teeth need to be protected by a crown.
  6. Bridges - When missing teeth are replaced with a bridge, the adjacent teeth require crowns in order to support the replacement teeth.

Crowns strengthen and protect the remaining tooth structure and can improve the appearance of your teeth very quickly.

Sierra Studio - Bridges

Sierra Studio - What is a Bridge
"What is a Bridge"
(Running Time 2:12) (Size 7.47mb)

A bridge, also known as a fixed partial denture, is a dental restoration used to replace a missing tooth by joining permanently to adjacent teeth or dental implants.

Bridges can be fabricated directly in the mouth using the same ceramic materials as a crown. A dental bridge can definitely improve the smile of an individual with a missing tooth. However, dental bridges have more to offer than just aesthetic appeal. They can prevent the surrounding teeth from drifting out of position and fill spaces that would otherwise leave surrounding teeth susceptible to tooth decay. Dental Implants can also serve this function and often have much easier home care and longer lasting results.

The best candidate for a dental bridge is a person with one or more missing teeth, good dental hygiene and healthy gums. An individual with a dental bridge will need to brush and floss daily and limit sugar and starch intake. Hard and sticky snacks should be avoided as well. Dental visits, including professional cleanings, should take place every six months. With proper dental hygiene, a dental bridge can last from 5-20 years.

While this has been a tried and true method used in dentistry for years . Although bridges have their  place, a second and possibly better choice for replacing a missing tooth is the dental implant Now the most advanced state of the art technique for tooth replacement. Implants are becoming the new standard due to their high success rate and conservative treatment with no damage to adjacent tooth structures. Talk to your doctor about the benefits!

Your Sierra doctor will be happy to help you decide which option is right for you!

When teeth are heavily decayed they may be too weak to remain healthy with just a filling.

A custom made crown made from highly durable ceramic products which mimic the biocompatibility and strength of natural tooth structure can give a tooth a second chance. Even if you lose a tooth entirely, a bridge can be made which spans the gap and attaches to the stable teeth on either side of the space.
